Application Guidance

How to use Tile Adhesive T2 — Heavy Duty

Follow this sequence for consistent results. Deviating on water ratio or open time is the most common cause of on-site failure.

Prepare the substrate

Surface must be sound, clean, level and fully cured. In wet areas ensure waterproofing membrane is complete and cured per its own specification.

Mix

Add 5 to 6 litres of clean water per 20 kg bag and mix mechanically for 3–5 minutes to a uniform, lump-free consistency. Allow to stand 5 minutes, then remix briefly. Do not re-temper with extra water once it stiffens.

Apply

Comb out with an appropriately sized notched trowel. For large-format tiles, back-butter the tile as well as combing the substrate to achieve full bed contact.

Set the tile

Press firmly with a sliding action. Verify full bedding by lifting a test tile — large-format units require near-total coverage, not spot contact.

What is the difference between T1 and T2?

T1 is IS 15477:2019 Type 1T (C1T), normal adhesion, for standard tiles. T2 is Type 2T (C2T), improved adhesion: 1.49 N/mm² dry tensile against 0.65 for T1, and 1.09 wet against 0.58. Use T2 for large-format tiles, heavy units and wet areas.

Which adhesive do I use in a bathroom?

T2. Wet areas cycle the bond through moisture, which requires the improved-adhesion C2T class. Its wet tensile adhesion of 1.09 N/mm² is nearly double the T1 figure.

What is the open time?

30 minutes, with 25 minutes adjustability and a pot life of 90 to 120 minutes.

How much area does one bag cover?

50 to 60 sq.ft per 20 kg bag using a 6 mm x 6 mm square-notched trowel at a 3 mm bed.

Do I need to back-butter large tiles?

Yes. Combing the substrate alone rarely achieves full contact under a large tile. Back-buttering as well is standard practice and materially reduces hollowness and later cracking.

How does it perform under heat?

Shear adhesion after heat ageing is 1.0 N/mm², against 0.79 for T1 — which matters on surfaces exposed to thermal cycling.
